Root Canal
Root canals are a valuable and effective dentistry technique in repairing severely decayed and infected teeth, allowing your dentist to save your natural tooth and avoiding extraction whenever possible. Preserving natural teeth is important, primarily because “real teeth” help maintain healthy bone levels in the jaw.
Retreat Root Canal
In most cases, a tooth that received a root canal lasts a lifetime with proper care. Occasionally, however, root canal retreatment is needed to correct an issue that went unnoticed the first time around, or a new problem affecting the tooth months or years after the initial root canal treatment.
Apicoectomy
An apicoectomy, also referred to as root end resection, is a surgical option available to dental patients when conventional root canals (or root canal retreatments) fail or aren’t practical. The surgery is considered minor and typically involves a small incision in the gum that allows the endodontist to directly access the tips of the tooth roots for treatment

Unstable bone levels invite a host of other potential problems, such as periodontal disease, which can further damage otherwise healthy teeth and, in extreme cases, even lead to chronic conditions like heart disease. Your dentist will always try to avoid losing a natural tooth out of concern for your oral health as well as your overall well-being.
The Root Canal Procedure
Procedure Steps
Step 1 The endodontist will take 3D x-rays of your mouth to look for signs of infection and get an idea of the shape of the tooth root.
Step 2 The root canal dentist then administers local anesthesia and drills an access hole into the tooth and removes the dental pulp and bacteria. The dentist will then place a temporary filling or crown
Step 3 Upon return, the endodontist reopens the access hole to fill the interior of the tooth with gutta-percha. The tooth is subsequently sealed and receives a permanent filling.
Step 4 The final appointment is needed to fully restore the tooth’s strength and function by fortifying it with a crown in an effort to prevent cracking of the weakened tooth.
